Italy’s Passion Play of Sordevolo and the Shroud of Turin

The Passion of Christ is a sacred play performed by the villagers of Sordevolo, Italy, every five years since 1816. The play is an open-air theater that puts on a dramatic presentation of Christ's suffering, death, and trial. The play features actors, extras, musicians, and stage operators, and takes place from June to September, with 400 people participating three nights a week.

Passion plays originated in Europe during the Middle Ages as a way to teach people about Christianity. For many who watch them, they are opportunities for meditation and religious devotion, and can be powerful symbols of the core of Christian spiritual life.

Coach through Piedmont region, tour Santa Marta Church. Attend 'The Passion of Christ' performance. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Explore Santa Maria di Loreto in Graglia, tour the Black Madonna of Loreto. Visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Sacro Monte di Oropa. Dinner at a local restaurant in Oropa. Overnight in Sordevolo.
 

Depart for Turin, explore Piazza Castello, visit Cathedral and Museum of the Holy Shroud. Leisure time for shopping and exploration. Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Turin.

 

Mass at St. Mary of the Angels Basilica. Tour Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Explore Church of St. Clare. Free time for shopping or relaxation. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Coach to Lake Maggiore. Optional cruise to the islands. Dinner and overnight at the hotel on Lake Maggiore.

Visit Milan for a guided tour to Sforzesco Castle, Galleria Vittorio Emmanuel, and Duomo Cathedral. Return to Lake Maggiore for dinner. Overnight at the hotel on Lake Maggiore.

Morning transfer to Milan Malpensa Airport for return flight home
