TERESIAN PATH IN SOUTHERN SPAIN
8 Days / 6 Nights
Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada (1515-1582) was a prominent Spanish mystic, Carmelite nun, theologian and author, and was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church fourty years after her death. She dedicated her life to reforming the Christian Order of the Carmelite nuns and had a strong following in Spain – she was even considered as the national saint. Forty years after her death, in 1622, Teresa was canonized by Pope Gregory XV. At the time she was considered a candidate for national patron saint of Spain, but this designation was awarded to St. James the Apostle. However, not until 27 September 1970 did Pope Paul VI proclaim Teresa the first female Doctor of the Church in recognition of her centuries-long spiritual legacy to Catholicism. Following the Holy Route of Saint Teresa of Ávila is a way to see Spain from this enriching perspective, while also visiting some of the country’s most beautiful cities, villages and monuments.

The religious renewal and the strength transmitted by the Saint when she appeared in public reached the ears of certain ladies from Caravaca who belonged to the most important families and, led by Doña Catalina de Otálora and Don Rodrigo de Moya, decided to lock themselves in a house and not come out until St. Teresa accepted their proposal of founding a convent in Caravaca de la Cruz. In spring 1575, the Ávila Saint, while in Beas de Segura, sent Brother John of Ávila and Antonio Gaytán to the town of Caravaca de la Cruz to arrange the terms for the possible foundation. After agreeing the conveyance of the income and ground rent with the families of the ladies who had locked themselves in the house and after obtaining the necessary license from the Council of Military Orders, Saint Teresa expressed her firm intention of personally founding a convent in Caravaca de la Cruz. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the monastery and the new church of San José de Caravaca de la Cruz were built and furnished with chapels, altarpieces and statues sponsored by important personalities and the donations made by many of the town’s locals.Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the monastery and the new church of San José de Caravaca de la Cruz were built and furnished with chapels, altar pieces and statues. Ana de Jesús (Lobera) as founder and prioress, who was nicknamed ‘the captain of the prioresses’ and to whom Saint John of the Cross was to later dedicate his Spiritual Canticle when they were both in Granada. The current building, located in what might be considered the entrance to the historical quarter of Granada, known as El Realejo, at the start of the important Calle San Matías, was acquired in 1584 and the nuns moved there on 8th November of the aforesaid year.
