The history of religion in the Netherlands has been characterized by considerable diversity of religious thought and practice. From 1600 until the second half of the 20th century, the north and west had embraced the Protestant Reformation and became Calvinist. The southeast was predominately Catholic. Religion in Belgium is diversified, with Christianity, in particular the Catholic Church, representing the largest community, though it has experienced a significant decline since the 1960s (when it was the nominal religion of over 80% of the population).Christianity first came to Switzerland with the Roman soldiers. The oldest written evidence for this dates from the 4th century. In 381, Christianity was declared to be the only religion of the Roman Empire.
